I’ve been climbing since I was nine or ten, and at my peak was climbing 5.14 and V12. It’s been a big part of my life, but with a baby on the way, a job that routinely demands 50–60 hours a week, and work travel, I needed a way to keep climbing that fit into my life. I live in Houston, TX, where we have 3-4 mega gyms, and more coming. Honestly theyre all quite accessible - no more than 20ish mins away. For me, I like my climbing sessions to be ~1.5 hours, but adding in drive time, finding a consistent 2.5 hour block (along with ensuring my also-working wife would be around for child care) became quite challenging.
Initially, I was nervous that I’d buy this wall and it would just sit in my garage. Coming from years of climbing outside and in gyms, I worried it would feel too small to be enjoyable or give me a meaningful workout. Once I committed, though, I found those concerns really didn’t play out.
The biggest selling point for me was how well it fit my space. Would I have loved a bigger, taller wall? Absolutely. But my garage has limits, and I wasn’t interested in removing beams, changing the structure, or turning this into a home renovation project. This gave me a substantial climbing setup within the space I already had, without making any modifications to my house.
That also makes it feel like a much more practical long-term investment. I’m not building something into this particular garage that I’ll have to leave behind. When we move, I can take it apart and bring it to the next house (or move it inside). Being able to have a proper home wall without permanently committing part of my house to it was a huge factor in my decision.
I paired mine with a Tension Board setup, and there’s a ton of climbing available. What surprised me most is how little I think about the size once I’m actually using it. You’re generally doing a few harder movements instead of long, 12-move problems, but those shorter sequences are challenging and satisfying. The finger strength and power gains have been very real, and I’ve found plenty to work on even with my climbing background. The adjustable angle adds another way to change the difficulty and keep things interesting.
The convenience has been just as valuable. With work and a baby, being able to walk into the garage and get a session in makes a huge difference. It takes the travel and logistics out of climbing, which makes it much easier to keep it part of my routine. Additionally, want a coffee? take 5 steps inside. Need to use the bathroom? Enjoy YOUR bathroom. Baby / wife needs something? no big. Something pops up with work? I just bring my laptop to the garage and work while resting. Randomly have an hour free during your day? boom, climbing within 3 mins. Its truly unbeatable. Honestly, a gym could be walking distance from me and I'd still be like ehhh.
As for the product itself, the wall feels very sturdy, and installation was straightforward. Essential did a great job making the assembly process approachable, and their customer service was excellent. At one point, I was texting pictures and asking, “Am I doing this right?” and got helpful guidance. That support made it easy to keep moving through the installation with confidence. Delivery was a great experience as well.
Overall, this has exceeded my expectations. It fits my garage, required no modifications to my house, can come with me when I move, and gives me climbing I actually look forward to doing. It’s worked well enough that I canceled my gym membership.
